Artist Statement

I’ve always been drawn to nature and the visual arts.  After a 40-year business career, I picked up a camera and started my photography journey. Since then, my photography has evolved; initially, the Florida coast and Everglades were my inspiration. Now, I’m creating Western Art.

Creating fine artwork is more than light, colors, tones, textures, and composition - all critical skills for a professional photographer. It is also finding an inspiring scene or subject, then interpreting the scene as an expression true to my ideals of art.

Photography can range from capturing a memory, to professional photography as a craft, and to fine art photography. Each have their own merits to appreciate. My fine art landscape photography comes from a blend of my dad’s influence as an artist, a love of nature and the outdoors, and the enjoyment I get from digital photography as a media. Plus, having a passion and commitment to produce art gives me a deep sense of purpose.

Approach to Fine Art Photography

Western landscapes and coastal scenes make up the bulk of my art works.

Because most of my works are nature and outdoors, my research and planning activities are geared to finding unique locations that have breath taking scenes.  If I’m not in the field on a photoshoot, then I’m researching new sites for an upcoming photoshoot. Research includes finding new locations and learning the best times for lighting, cloud coverage, weather, and time of year. In many cases a new work requires multiple trips to a site.

Working on a composition is mostly inspirational, authentic and with just enough composition rules to ensure a quality work. I do like compositions that draw the viewer into the scene.  Other optional compositions are patterns and dominate subjects. I favor light and dark spaces, colors that make a bold statement, detailed textures, and large solid shapes.

All works go through a post editing process to clean up the composition and enhance the tone, color, and sharpness.

My camera gear and studio equipment can produce small to large format prints up to 40 x 60 inches. Prints are available in multiple sizes.  Except for the two smallest sizes, all works are limited to 75 prints in total. Prints are on high quality fine art media including traditional matte paper, extremely high-gloss paper and high-definition metal.

 Artist BIO

While growing up in South Florida, art was a big part of my life.  My dad was an artist working out of a home studio.  During my early teens, I was painting with oils, and even sold a few works before college.  My love for the outdoors took hold in part because I spent weekends and summers camping and exploring in the Florida Everglades, scuba diving ocean reefs, deep sea fishing, and going on road trips to the Florida Keys.  After college I became a small business owner and consultant.  But eventually my life purpose led me back to art and nature.

During my business career there were many challenges and personal sacrifices.  As I was losing the appetite for business, landscape photography became a hobby.  During my business career, I’d been fortunate to travel to just about every state, most big cities, and a few foreign countries; plus, I have had many adventures exploring America’s breath-taking scenes.  My early art experience, business and personal travels, and photography hobby set the stage to make the jump to a full time fine art photography career.

Hopefully my art provides a window for you to experience the beauty of nature.
